Pet Adoptions and Transfers

“Adopters Welcome”

Our goal at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter is to make adoption the first choice for most families, providing them with a straightforward, timely, and judgment-free adoption experience. With the Pet Adoption and Transfer programs, animals that have been surrendered, abandoned, or are otherwise in need of a new home can find loving families to join.

When working with a potential adopter, our customer care and animal care teams come together to ensure that, not only is the animal a good fit for their home and lifestyle, but the adopter understands the pet’s medical and behavioral history or needs. Countless different pets have walked through our doors and every time they’re adopted, we know a new human-animal bond has formed.

“One of my favorite adoption stories that we’ve had was a really heartwarming moment. A family came in looking for a new pup, they had unfortunately lost their dog that they had had for many, many years. They came in to look for a new dog and we spoke with the family to find out what kind of pet they were looking for. There were a couple of animals they wanted to meet, so we did a couple of meets with some other dogs; all super sweet dogs, but just weren’t the exact right fit. Then, we brought in Ms. Dova. She was a sweet little pitbull puppy, about 6 months old, and just the smile on those kids’ faces when she walked in was just awesome to see. The parents were super excited to take this new puppy home for their kids to grow up with, the mom gave me the biggest hug when she left!” - Sam Ward, Customer Care Lead

Often, we are joined by pets who don’t get as much attention from adopters in the area as other pets or need certain behavioral training or medical needs that we are unable to provide in our Shelter. Through partnerships with other animal shelters and rescue organizations, CAS is able to transfer pets to areas where there are more potential adopters available, or where pets’ medical and behavioral needs can be met. Not only does this help pets find homes and communities where they have a higher chance of adoption, but it also opens up space in our Shelter to reciprocate that assistance. Just as we transfer pets out of the Shelter, we also transfer pets in! Through these partnerships, we can offer support to other shelters and rescues that have specific pets whose needs we can possibly meet.

Arctic, the fluffy white Huskey in the video above, joined us just last week as a transfer from the Panhandle Humane Society. A family came in looking for a new dog to join their family and, before she could even reach her kennel, the family wanted to meet Arctic! The children instantly fell in love with her and, just like that, they found their new family member. Arctic was adopted within a few hours of joining us at our Shelter and we couldn’t be happier with the quick turnaround for this transferred pet.

Overall, the Pet Adoption and Transfer programs at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter are making a huge difference in the lives of animals, not only in Cheyenne, but all over the country. And, through our partnerships with other animal organizations, we are able to expand our reach and help even more animals find their forever homes. If you're looking to adopt a sweet new pet, make sure to come by the Cheyenne Animal Shelter; you may just meet your new best friend. Can’t adopt? You can always support the Cheyenne Animal Shelter by volunteering or by making a donation that directly supports the animals in our care! Thank you all for your support.
