“Adopters Welcome”

That’s our philosophy here at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter. Our goal with our pet adoption program is to make adoption the first choice for most families and to provide a straightforward, timely, and judgment-free adoption experience. You can meet our adoptable pets in person during our business hours, and view them anytime on our website as well. Please note that we also have an active foster care program, so some animals listed as adoptable online may not be onsite during your visit.

You can check out all of our adoptable pets, adoption hours, and guidelines below!

How do I adopt an animal?

  1. Head to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter during our adoption hours to walk through our rooms and meet adoptable pets!

  2. With the assistance of our adoption counselors, sit with and learn about your potential pet to make sure it’s a good match. If you are interested in adopting a dog and you already have a dog in your home, we encourage you to bring your family dog(s) along for a meet-and-greet before adopting.

  3. Select a collar and tag for your pet — this is a requirement for all cat and dog adoptions. Adopted pets are also required to leave on a leash or in a carrier.

  4. Complete all required adoption contracts with our Customer Care team, pay any required adoption fees, and fall in love with your new companion!

General Adoption Guidelines:

  • Adopters must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Adoptions are completed on a first-come, first-serve basis. CAS will not place a hold on a pet in an effort to find that pet a home as soon as possible.

  • While the Shelter makes every effort to provide as much information possible about our adoptable pets, many animals come into our care as strays with no known history, or from families provided limited information at the time of surrender. We encourage you to visit us with an open mind and to ask our team any questions that you may have.

  • Please note that pet behavior is often a result of environment and context. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that behaviors we have not observed in the Shelter won’t occur at home. Likewise, many behaviors we do see in the shelter may not occur in the home. Research shows that behavioral incompatibilities in Shelter pets (in dogs specifically - barking in the kennel, kennel soiling, food or toy guarding, or reactivity towards other dogs, pets, or children) are no more prominent than they are in the general pet population. The key to success is to go slowly and purposefully through your first weeks and months at home with your new pet.

  • Adoption fees are an essential source of funding for the Shelter, and we strive to keep them as affordable as possible. We understand that these fees may sometimes pose a challenge, so we frequently offer adoption promotions and provide additional discounts for certain animals, military members, and senior citizens. If an adoption fee is preventing you from bringing a pet into your home, please reach out to our team—we may be able to assist!

  • All adopted pets are required to leave the Shelter with a collar and tag, and on a leash or in a carrier. Collars, tags, and leashes are available for purchase at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter during your adoption.

  • Adoption fees are non-refundable. However, returned adoptions processed within 30 days will be credited toward another adoption.

  • All dogs and cats adopted from the Cheyenne Animal Shelter will be spayed and neutered prior to adoption. Exceptions are only made in the event of a known medical condition causing inordinate risk to an animal. Rabbits can be spayed or neutered prior to adoption at the adopter’s request.

  • The Cheyenne Animal Shelter does not allow for the adoption of littermate puppies. This can result in Littermate Syndrome. The Shelter does, however, encourage the adoption of kittens in pairs!

  • The City of Cheyenne has a 4-pet limit per household. Adopters are encouraged to consider this when seeking to add additional pets to their home.

  • At the discretion of the Shelter, persons may be denied adoption.
